White House Releases New AI Strategy for the U.S.

President Donald J. Trump spoke at the “Winning The AI Race” summit on July 23 about the U.S. plan on artificial intelligence in the future. This plan was aimed at maintaining the dominance of the U.S. in the evolving field of AI. The initiative began with an executive order from the White House to remove the restrictions on artificial intelligence that the Biden Administration had placed.

After the summit, Trump signed more executive orders to accelerate AI development.

The Trump Administration’s plan will support the buildout of data centers, withhold funding from states that have “burdensome” AI regulations, urge federal agencies to repeal their rules surrounding any obstruction of AI development, and establish a program to deliver AI packages — which include everything that could be needed to make a model — to U.S. allies.

In addition to the plan, an executive order was signed after the summit, intended to prevent “woke” AI in the federal government. It is the first time the U.S. government has tried to shape the behavior of AI. Tech companies now have to prove that their chatbots adhere to the order before selling their AI technology to the government.

The AI Action Plan emphasizes the importance of defending AI innovations against security risk. It includes a few specifics on how exactly the administration is going to combat the issue, however.

It also focuses on promoting open-source and open-weight foundation models, which are the type of models that can be downloaded freely and adapted by anybody. This helps entrepreneurs and anyone trying to cheaply make an AI model, but also increases the likelihood of deepfakes and malicious intentions.

In short, Trump’s AI plan involves AI bigger and better, keeping the U.S. at the top of innovation, and fiercely encouraging tech companies to go all in on artificial intelligence.
