In a new study published by researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine, discoveries have been unveiled supporting the idea that human brain activity can continue sustaining advanced language tasks even when a person is fully unconscious under the influence of general anesthesia. These findings significantly challenge long-held beliefs supported by past studies on the relationship between human brain activity and consciousness as a whole.
As part of their study’s methodology, Dr. Sameer Sheht, a professor and Colleen Foundation Endowed Chair of neurosurgery at Baylor, and colleagues recorded the activity of neurons in the hippocampus of the brain using Neuropixels probes. Specifically, these recordings were made while patients were being treated by epilepsy surgery and under general anesthesia. This allowed the researchers to see how the brain transmits signals in response to language and sounds being made around the patient even when they were unconscious. Patterns of brain activity from the hippocampus revealed solid evidence of the brain’s ability to process language in real time. These patterns also showed the brain’s ability to distinguish different parts of speech, including the use of verbs, nouns and descriptive words and phrases, and even predict a speaker’s next words before they were spoken.
These findings suggest that important cognitive abilities could persist even without conscious effort. The new knowledge and techniques gained from this experiment could support medical advancements and communication devices in the future, as well as new and exciting research into the human brain. Overall, these findings can dismantle our understanding of the human brain altogether and inspire discoveries that can allow us to fully understand the human brain in the future.
