Ariana Grande returns to the spotlight with her eighth studio album, “Petal”

The title track, “petal,” continues to showcase Grande’s emotional journey as she uses the image of a flower surviving through harsh conditions to symbolize endurance and resilience. The fourth and fifth tracks — ”stay” and “oh well,” respectively — tell the story of wanting to make things work despite all odds and then realizing that the relationship is dead, and moving on is the only way to heal. Tracks six and seven, “big feelings” and “freak,” show the turning point where Grande expresses more of her anger, rejecting the pressure always to seem perfect. The interlude, “warning signs (interlude),” serves as a shift into the album’s final phase, including songs such as “like i do,” “never get over me,” “bad thing (bunny hop),” and “nowhere, nobody.” Based on critical judgment, Billboard has ranked the top three songs within the album with “nowhere, nobody” in third place, “bad thing (bunny hop)” in second place, and “petal” in first.

Released on her own personal sub-label, Babydoll Music, under Republic Records, “Petal” contrasts with Grande’s usual work, embodying softer vocals and darker lyricism rather than relying on powerful vocals paired with upbeat pop production. With that being said, feedback for the album from general audiences has been divided: both The Guardian and The Associated Press rated the album three out of five stars, while people on social media have commented on how several tracks sounded extremely similar to one another, making the overall album sound less interesting than Grande’s previous releases.

Other than the album itself, the music video for “petal” quickly became one of the main talking points for Grande’s new era. Although many fans praised the video’s artistic direction and cinematography, a lot of online discussion has revolved around Grande’s physical appearance, further fueling the public to make speculations on her health. Shortly after the release, representatives from Grande’s team stated that she will be taking a step back from public appearances after the "Eternal Sunshine” tour ends.

Although “Petal” has raised many conversations surrounding where Grande’s musical path is heading, many listeners viewed the album as a natural progression for artists entering new stages of their careers.
