Through the group stage, four teams remain unbeaten. All four of these teams play in Group 1 in the Super 8s. How did this happen?
Before the start of the T20 World Cup, the Super 8s, the second stage of the World Cup following the Group Stage, were pre-seeded as follows:
X1; India; Group 1 X2; Australia; Group 1 X3; West Indies; Group 1 X4; South Africa; Group 1 Y1; England; Group 2 Y2; New Zealand; Group 2 Y3; Pakistan; Group 2 Y4; Sri Lanka; Group 2
The rationale for these, as described by Hindustan Times is because “Broadcasters and sponsors know exactly where India, Pakistan, and other heavyweights should be on specific dates, which makes it far easier to sell and package the product globally.”
With the culmination of the Group Stage, seven of the eight pre-seeded teams advanced to the next stage. The only anomaly is Australia, replaced by unbeaten Zimbabwe.
The result of the near-perfect efforts by India, Zimbabwe, the West Indies, and South Africa is a group of these four teams. The second-place finishers form their own group: England, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
With the tournament advancing further, heavyweights may be knocked out, as the first round's excellence yields no additional reward.
