What TikTok’s viral “Peter Pan Girl” says about parasocial relationships.

The viral controversy surrounding a Disneyland visitor, Toni, has sparked debate about parasocial relationships, personal boundaries, and whether social media has made people feel entitled to others’ lives simply because the internet is so accessible.

Toni, who posts under the username @babytoni99 on TikTok, has documented her frequent trips to Disney for years. However, videos of Toni repeatedly interacting with Peter Pan at the Disney parks have recently surfaced, with a majority of the audience agreeing that her behavior in the presence of the character is excessive and borderline harassment. What makes this particular situation interesting is that the Peter Pan we see walking around the Disney Parks is not real; he is a fictional character played by an actor who is actively working and getting paid to interact with fans. The distinction between a real connection and obligation becomes blurry when audiences continually see Toni’s interactions with the same few Peter Pan actors.

When parasocial relationships develop, someone develops a one-sided emotional connection with a public figure, often deluding themselves into thinking they have a personal relationship with said public figure. Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with loving a fictional character, but the narrative begins to change when boundaries seem to get crossed and when fans begin to treat a short interaction as the start of a personal relationship as opposed to a public encounter.

Although Toni’s relationship with the Peter Pan actors seen through her videos is not the healthiest, the backlash she has received also reveals irony in the entire situation. The same people who have commented on Toni crossing boundaries with the character performers have also violated her boundaries, with audience members even finding out Toni is married.

With that being said, this does not mean the criticism Toni has received is unreasonable. When posting on a public platform, viewers are allowed to question actions that seem to make others uncomfortable, especially when the person on the receiving end cannot simply walk away. Ultimately, the entire controversy has revealed two things: social media encourages people to form connections with people they do not know, and algorithms tend to push the most exaggerated version of a story. One person crossing a boundary with someone else does not mean they should have their own rights to privacy violated.
