With the group stage and Super 8 games complete, three games remain in the 2026 edition of the T20 World Cup. The semi-finals are set after the final spot decider—India versus West Indies on Sunday.
South Africa comes into their game against New Zealand undefeated, winning all seven of their matches so far, with big wins against two top teams in India and the West Indies in the Super 8. The Proteas would want to avenge their loss in the final in 2024, seeking to add their second ICC trophy in the last year.
New Zealand has lost two of its matches, with one more rained out. The team’s losses to South Africa and England have undoubtedly dented the confidence of the Kiwis, though their team remains top quality and could pose a big threat to the Proteas in their rematch on Wednesday.
England started its campaign in a rocky, unconvincing manner, winning against Nepal by only four runs, then losing to the West Indies. Since then, the Lions have picked up steam and have won all of their Super 8 matches.
India faces a slightly different proposition. The tournament favorites for many, given its absurd track record spanning from the last edition of the T20 World Cup, India has won six of its seven matches, losing significantly to the last tournament’s runners-up in the final’s venue. The Indians have not looked convincing as a batting unit in most matches, yet in home conditions and with proven ability, it may only be a matter of time.
All four teams can win on any given day, yet handling pressure and coming out triumphant often does not mirror paper match-ups. It is anybody’s trophy now.
