Curry Erupts for 46, 49 as Warriors Sweep Spurs Road Series

With six straight road losses and the eight-and-two Spurs blazing hot, not many would have expected the Warriors to win both games in San Antonio. Thirty-seven-year-old Stephen Curry made sure they came out clean.

Victor Wembanyama started the year as a top MVP candidate, and even though his numbers have eased since the Spurs’ 5-0 start, there are signs of an unstoppable force in Texas.

Stephen Curry came off an 11-point game in a 126-102 loss against the Thunder, coming back from an illness that kept him out of multiple games.

The Warriors, on the back-end of a back-to-back on Wednesday, started off down 14 at the end of the first quarter, scoring only 14 to the Spurs’ 28 in the 12 minutes of the game. Strong second and third quarters brought the Warriors into the game and ultimately the lead, as Curry stepped into rhythm to bring the Warriors back to winning ways.

Curry scored a game-high 46 in the come-from-behind win for the now 7-6 Warriors.

On Friday, the Spurs’ young talent, who sporadically outplayed the Warriors in the previous matchup, were met with the Warriors’ more consistent shooting, as Curry’s gradually swelling fluency kept the game close throughout.

Down nearly double digits with 5:14 left in the game, Jimmy Butler knocked down a crucial three to keep the experienced Warriors in the hunt. Another couple of threes from Brandin Podziemski and Gary Payton gave the Warriors a one-point lead with 3:37 left on the clock.

Back-and-forth clutch baskets continued, with Victor Wembanyama the main benefactor for the Spurs on both ends.

With less than 10 seconds and the ball down one, Curry cleverly pump-faked to draw contact. He calmly drilled his 48th and 49th points to take the lead from the charity stripe.

A Fox miss at the buzzer meant the Warriors stole two games in the death, en route to an 8-6 record in the packed West. Curry finished one shy of a 50-point game, making nine of his 16 threes and 16-26 field goals overall. He also tied Michael Jordan’s record for the most 40-point performances after turning 30 years old, completing his 44th such performance on Friday.

The Warriors and Spurs see themselves in playoff settings in the standings, but both teams will hope to carry forth momentum early into the season.
