Atlantic Rocked by 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the treacherous Drake’s Passage on Friday • August 24, 2025 • Times of India

On Friday, a severe 7.5 magnitude earthquake shook the seas south of the coast of Chile.

Drake’s Passage, which has been notorious since the accounts of colonial explorers of the treacherous journey from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean, experienced the brunt of the earthquake.

Chile issued some tsunami warnings on its southern coasts, though none were confirmed as widespread threats.

The stretch of water known as Drake’s Passage was named after the maritime explorer Sir Francis Drake during his expeditions west. This area is vital for oceanographers and still poses a threat to ships.

The significant earthquakes have put an increasing impetus on seismic watch in similar regions worldwide, as safety for crew and researchers can be compromised in dangerous circumstances.

As the world’s mysteries gradually become attributable knowledge, care and caution secure safety in research.
